THE CHALLENGE

Client: Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation (MVZI)

Project Duration: 8 months

The online portal for the Evidence and Analytical Information System for Higher Education in the Republic of Slovenia (eVŠ portal) is the Ministry’s official website for key information regarding higher education in Slovenia. The client initiated the redesign to improve access to information, upgrade the user experience, and reduce the burden on support services. The project’s goal was to redesign the portal in accordance with user needs, Ministry requirements, and legislation, while unifying the portal’s graphic identity with the national administration’s branding.

Through research, we identified various baseline starting points for the redesign.

WHAT WE DID

The project was carried out in five phases: introductory activities, analysis of the current state, understanding user needs and requirements, preparation of content redesign guidelines, UX/UI design, and the preparation of developer specifications.

We started the process by reviewing the existing portal and best practices, and compiled a list of legislative and other constraints that had to be considered during the redesign.

During user research we identified three main stakeholder groups and conducted 17 interviews, 2 surveys, and 1 workshop. We focused on identifying the content stakeholders need most, how they use the portal, and the challenges they face with the current system.

Based on user needs, we designed content redesign guidelines and an initial prototype for content layout. This prototype was tested with users, and their feedback was integrated into further iterations.

Then we focused on the structure and visual redesign, designed user flows, and developed a wireframe of the portal. This was again tested with all stakeholder groups. We then created a clickable prototype (26 pages total) to test specific user scenarios.

In the final phase, we prepared the final portal design, technical specifications for developers, and a comprehensive design system.

RESULTS AND IMPACT

The key change in the redesigned portal is improved accessibility to information. By implementing a unified information structure (standardized page types) and a consistent visual hierarchy, we made navigation through the portal’s content significantly easier.

The portal is currently in the implementation phase.
